Cook Nutritious Dog Food

I've been buying 30 lbs of kibble every three weeks and although I enjoy the convenience of a 2-day delivery, I've also had a few setbacks as well.

Sometimes the bags come from warehouses that have had mice (poop in the box) or come infested with ants or other insects; while this poses a health problem for your dog, it also means your house or shed will soon be crawling with bugs!

Another problem I've come across is the frequency of pet food recalls! If you're buying off brands to save money, you're compromising on quality ingredients which often come with terrible recalls like salmonella, aflatoxin (mold poisoning), listeria, E.coli, and many other contaminants. Even Blue Buffalo has had recalls!

           TOP 10 DOG FOOD RECALLS

After reading several top-notch vets' blogs, I realized that the best way to meet my dog's increasing health needs, is by feeding her "fresh" food... and so I started with the basics: meat, vegetables and eggs.

sweet potato, barley, carrots, ground beef and eggs, pinch of salt & olive oil (other ingredients can include spinach, peas, brown rice, butternut squash, kale, blueberries, chia seeds, rosemary, garbanzo, cod liver oil, lamb, chicken, beef, liver, turkey, potatoes, broth and pinch of salt).

I started using it as a topping, but now I give her less kibble and mostly fresh cooked food....and she always begs for more!

It's not easy to cook for your pet--it's quite a commitment because you have to know what dogs cannot eat, how much protein they need and you might need fish oil (instead of olive oil).

So if you have an old gal that's getting weak, deaf and blind and needs a little extra boost, try cooking something wholesome and you'll love her reaction when she comes to the food bowl!
